Why is the project named “Barberton – Makhonjwa Mountainlands”? (BMML)

The geologists and scientists refer to this area as the “Barberton Mountainlands” which has become a universally recognized geological term which is why this name was given to the project.

The name “Makhonjwa” was added in recognition of the local customs and SiSwati name for the area.

Although the project is called Barberton/Makhonjwa Mountainlands World Heritage Site Project” (BMML WHS) the name by which the area will be known after declaration will be determined after wide community consultation has been done and all stakeholders have been consulted.

BMML is thus only a name relevant to the project which will end when the documentation (dossier) has been submitted to UNESCO.
